Door squeaks come from the hinge pin rubbing inside the hinge. A quick spray may quiet it for a few days, but cleaning and greasing the pin lasts much longer.
Quick answer
- Close the door and tap the hinge pin up and out with a nail and hammer.
- Clean the pin with steel wool or a rag.
- Coat it with white lithium grease or silicone lubricant.
- Tap it back in and open and close the door a few times.
Find the squeaky hinge
Open and close the door slowly and listen. Fix one hinge at a time, and keep the door closed while you do so it stays supported.
Steps
- Remove the pin. Place a nail or thin screwdriver under the pin’s head (from below), and tap upward with a hammer until the pin slides out.
- Clean it. Wipe off dirt and old grease. Use fine steel wool for rust.
- Lubricate. Apply a thin coat of white lithium grease or silicone lubricant along the pin.
- Reinstall. Push the pin back in and tap it down.
- Work the door open and closed several times to spread the lubricant. Wipe off any drips.
Household alternatives
Bar soap, petroleum jelly, or a little paraffin wax rubbed on the pin can work in a pinch. Avoid cooking oils, which can turn sticky and attract dust.
Spray-only quick fix
Spray a silicone lubricant into the top of the hinge with a straw nozzle while moving the door. Lay paper towels underneath to catch drips.
Still squeaking?
- The hinge may be loose. Tighten the screws. If a screw spins, see Door Won’t Latch for the longer-screw fix.
- Badly worn or bent hinges are inexpensive to replace. Match the size and corner shape (square or rounded).
Safety first Turn off power or water before working on fixtures and appliances, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and call a licensed pro for gas, major electrical, or structural work.
